There is a factor that separates the risk takers from the fearful, the depressed from the optimistic, and the successful from the unsuccessful. This factor is self-esteem, and it is the center to everything we do. It changes how people feel and how much they value themselves. The amount of self esteem a person has affects every thought and every action they take in life and the quality of life they end up having.
Your self-esteem is the respect or favorable impression you have of yourself. Many people are lacking in this area. Low self esteem is extremely dangerous. It leads to a negative outlook on life, constant failure and trouble moving forward, poor relationships, a poor self image, and lack of confidence. When you don’t value yourself and regard yourself highly, you see no point in being alive and feel helpless. Constant failure and trouble moving forward is common for those with low self esteem because they feel like they can’t do anything right. They don’t try new things because they assume they will fail. If you take no risks, you never see your true potential. Self esteem leads to poor relationships because people with low self esteem don’t love themselves very much. Therefore, they have trouble loving others.
People with low self esteem have a poor self image. Self image is how you see yourself. Low self esteem is a poor feeling about yourself. If you feel bad about yourself, you will see yourself badly too. You will see the world in a warped way that isn’t true. For example, when a person stares at you, you may assume they think you are ugly or stupid. Self esteem and self image are strongly linked. Self esteem affects your self image, and your self image affects your self esteem!
A lack of confidence is common in those with poor self esteem as well. Confidence is how much you believe in yourself and your abilities. Those with poor self esteem lack confidence because they lack self respect and don’t see themselves in a good light. How can a person who thinks they’re stupid and ugly have any confidence? They can’t! That’s why it’s extremely important to increase your self esteem.
Those with high self esteem are different. They are often happy and interact positively with others. They appear to have an absence of fear, which isn’t true. Just like anyone else, people with high self esteem feel fear. The difference is they don’t let it bother them. They use the feeling of fear as fuel to take risks. As they succeed at risk taking, their confidence increases because they learn to trust themselves. Courage and accomplishing scary things gives them a more positive self image and more self worth. With their high self esteem, these people are less bothered by negative people, comments, and outcomes. They know if they keep trying, they will succeed.
Try these tips for higher self esteem. Observe those with high self esteem. How do they act? How do they interact? Try to learn from what they do. If you don’t feel confident, act as if you are. Walk tall and smile, and you will feel more confident and optimistic. This will help your self esteem go up. Stop negative thoughts in their tracks. When negative thoughts or criticism come up in your head, say “Cancel” in your head and choose a new thought. Set goals and achieve them. Take risks. Reward yourself for small accomplishments. These are just a few tips to increase your self esteem, one of the most important things in your life.
